Since my last post, I have continued to work on building my skills as a filmmaker and developing my style. I helped film another wedding on June nineteenth which was very different from the first. This crowd was much more laid-back and traditional whereas the first wedding's was super energetic. It was great to get a sense of the different types of filming each of these crowds requires.
On the business side of things, last weekend I got a sense of what happens when a wedding is running late. Everything was pushed back due to traffic, so it was interesting to see the types of changes and cuts made from the original plan. I was supposed to film interviews with the guests so they could send their wishes to the couple in the video, but this never happened due to the lack of time. Today, I got to see the video from the first wedding I helped film! It was great to see the clips put together. I can't wait to see the video from last weekend's wedding! This week I'm going to try to connect with the editor at Rivion to see if I can get some training in that department. I'm also planning on doing a live-stream of an upcoming wedding on July third and will be meeting with the person in charge of Rivion's live-streams this week to learn how to do it!

During the Leadership Lab on June 9, 2021, I met with Mrs. Carsley and the other provisional fellows to discuss our summer work, develop a "pitch" for our projects, and begin to construct our websites. After meeting with my mentor, Ms. Johnson, I planned my 40% summer work to include my internship with Rivion Wedding Films and finding a couple to film a wedding video for later. This weekend, I shadowed my first wedding at the Naval Academy. It was a fantastic experience in which I learned a lot about not only the actual filming of a wedding, but the behind the scenes planning and work to make it run smoothly. From 2 pm to 10 pm, I filmed the bridal party getting ready, the ceremony, and the reception. I learned how to use a LAV microphone so I could film video messages/interviews during the reception, and was also taught how to use a Canon DSLR 6D Mark II for the first time (above is a picture of the camera!). One of the most significant things I learned had to do with the coloring of the footage. In the past, I wouldn't alter the settings of my camera to achieve my desired coloring; I would do this in post-production while editing. The filmmaker I shadowed, Nate, advised me to turn down the saturation of the film significantly while recording so I wouldn't have to play with this while editing. This gave the film a more sophisticated appearance, something I have struggled to achieve in the past. On Saturday the nineteenth I will be attending another wedding, and am excited to put the skills I learned this weekend to use! |
